So, you caught your boyfriend cheating.
You are now wondering if the relationship is what you thought it was.
You are now considering dumping him.
At the same time you want to forgive him.
Carrie Underwood might suggest you take your anger out a Louisville Slugger to both headlight, but what should you really do?
Take Care of Yourself First
Perhaps he confessed to cheating or perhaps you caught him in the act.
It does not matter how you find out there is going to be a period time where you are in shock.
The trust is now broken and your own self-esteem is damaged.
First thing first; take a good step back from the situation.
Then, take the time to indulge yourself in self-care.
That can mean anything from enjoying ice cream to getting your nails and hair done.
Do what makes you happy; it should help you feel better about things.
Take a Break
Take the time to cool down.
How about you get away from your guy for a day or two before you discuss or talk about the situation?
This is so that you can calm down and reconnect in such a way that there is not a huge emotional fight.
Also, your absence will give him time to think about what he did.
This gives him a chance to feel remorseful versus going into a defensive mode.
Do Not Get Details or Even
Your first instinct might be to get every single detail about what happened.
However, unless you know that you are breaking up for sure, do not ask for these things.
Knowing the details will help hurt the chances of your future with your guy.
Alternatively, you also do not want to go out and cheat yourself to even the score.
This just is not the time for you to get a quickie elsewhere.
It does not change the fact that he cheated: realistically speaking it will probably only make you feel worse if you stoop to his level.
Making it Right With Forgiveness
If you want to continue to be with him, make sure he is willing to do the right thing.
He needs to take responsibility for his actions.
He cannot be blaming you; plus, he needs to be willing to build the trust again.
Keep in mind this might take awhile and your guy needs to be accountable for what he does.
Only then can you use forgiveness of him and yourself to heal the relationship.
Forgiveness does not mean you are okay with what happened, but that you accept it happened and want to move forward to be happy yourself.
Trust your instincts and forgive yourself for any self-blame you might have.
Remember, this is not your fault.
There you have it.
That is how to deal with a cheating boyfriend. It boils down to one of two options.
You can break up or you can move forward.
Hopefully, you can make the right choices, because it’s the only way to find happiness you deserve.
